Katie Wilson

Katie Wilson (’16) will be graduating with a B.S. degree in Pre-Veterinary Science and a minor in Biochemistry. Katie received early acceptance to Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts as a sophomore and has a seat reserved for the class entering fall of 2016. She has yet to decide what aspect of veterinary medicine she wants to pursue, but is currently exploring various options.

Katie is a representative on the College of Natural Sciences Student Leadership Committee, is a member of the Animal Science Peer Mentor Group and a teaching assistant for the Dorset Sheep Management class. She is a staff member at the UMass Hadley Farm and works at a local horse barn. Katie also works in a research lab involving molecular immunology which will be the focus of her honors thesis. This past year she was selected as the Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences recipient of the William F. Field Alumni Association scholarship.

Katie has been fortunate to have a wide variety of internships. She interned at a VCA Animal Hospital working with small animals, assisting in surgery, and observing the inner workings of a vet clinic by shadowing general practitioners, radiologists, cardiologists, and dermatologists. She also interned at Ox Kill Farm managing, breeding, showing and working with Shire draft horses. In the summer of 2013 Katie worked at the EARTH Ltd. Discovery Center at Southwick’s Zoo handling exotic animals.

During the summer of 2014 Katie interned at M.A.S.H. veterinary clinic in Hopkinton, MA. This clinic focused on alternative and holistic medicine. Katie worked with technicians and was able to learn about different techniques and a new approach to veterinary medicine. During the summer of 2015 she is interning at Billings Farm & Museum in Woodstock, Vermont working with a herd of Jersey dairy cows.

Katie enjoys teaching and using her experience to mentor the incoming Animal Science students at UMass. She enjoys spending her free time reading, cooking, hiking, and kayaking. She also enjoys spoiling her hedgehog, Bailey. She looks forward to her last year UMass and preparing for her education at vet school.
