4-H "Exploring Veterinary Science" Camps held at UMass Hadley Farm
UMass faculty and students recently conducted two camps for 4-H members interested in veterinary science.

Catherine (Kate) McCusker who earned her Doctor of Philosophy degree through the Molecular and Cellular Biology Graduate Program in February of 2010 has had her research photos selected for the covers of the June 2014 issue of Disease Models & Mechanisms and the February 2014 issue of Regeneration.
Morgan Colt born at Hadley Farm
Foaled Saturday, June 14, 2014 - 104 lbs Bay State Justice is a Morgan colt by Ulenfield Elation (UVM Elite x Ulenfield Chelsea) out of HR Clearly Legal (Clearview Commander x Indian Creek Legally Wild). Justice has quite the personality and may be on his way to becoming the next resident UMass stallion!
Hanoverian Filly born at Hadley Farm
Foaled Wednesday, June 18, 2014 - 104.5 lbs Hanoverian filly by Wetherson out of Alessandra Q. Wetherson is a successful FEI dressage stallion by Werther out of the States Premium mare Walesca by Waldhorn. This gorgeous filly has tremendous potential and a sweet disposition.
Arcaro, Smith-Schneider and Webley Labs hosting medical students from Turkey
Five students from Yeditepe University in Istanbul, Turkey will be working in the labs of Dr. Kathleen Arcaro and Dr. Sallie Smith Schneider, both from the Department of Veterinary and Animal Sicences and Dr. Wilmore Webley of the Microbiology Department.
Chuang Chen Publishes Article on Immune Responses
Chuang Chen, who earned her Doctor of Philosophy degree through the Veterinary and Animal Sciences Department’s Animal Biotechnology and Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program in July of 2012 has had her first author paper research results published in the July 2014 issue of the Journal of Immunology.

Ph.D. candidate, Emrah Ilker Ozay named as a winner of the Global Academic Competition for Life Science Leaders of Tomorrow
The Catalent Applied Drug Delivery Institute and American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS), has announced the winners of their “Global Academic Competition for Life Science Leaders of Tomorrow.” Chosen from leading U.S. and International universities with graduate programs in pharmaceutical science, the five winners were:
- Emrah Ilker Ozay, UMass Amherst, “Slipping through the blood brain barrier with cell penetrating peptide mimics”

Hanoverian Filly Born at Hadley Farm
Foaled Thursday, May 29 at the UMass Hadley Farm Equine Center. Dornröschen UM is a Hanoverian filly by Elite Hanoverian Stallion Donarweiss out of Elite Mare Weltrose by Weltruhm (Weltmeyer/Nevado xx). Dornroschen weighed 118 lbs at birth.
Morgan Filly Born at Hadley Farm
Foaled Sunday, May 4 at the UMass Hadley Farm Equine Center. Bay State Jewel is a Morgan filly by RNH How Do U Like Me Now out of Bay State Notorious (Windcrest Highlander x Bay State Winsom). This filly can trace her government bloodlines back to U S Panez and original government mare Narcissa. Bay State Jewel weighed 62 lbs at birth.
New Chicken Brooder
Faculty members, John Balise, Hélène Cousin and Dom Alfandari assisted by students Sasha Santiago, Becca Pack, and Gretchen McLinden have constructed a new chicken brooder. The brooder will be used to house the Rainbow Ranger broilers that are raised by the students in the Poultry Management class.
