Science Night - April 23, 2015

The annual Veterinary and Animal Sciences Department Science Night will be held Thursday, April 23 on the fourth floor of the Integrated Sciences Building.  Honors Theses Presentations will begin at 4:00 pm in Conference Room 427L.  Refreshments will be served at 6:00 pm. Abstracts will be posted in the reception area.  Posters will be presented from 4:00 - 6:30pm in the Atrium.

Sandra Petersen selected by President Obama for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring

President Obama today named fourteen individuals and one organization as the newest recipients of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring (PAESMEM). These mentors will receive their awards at a White House ceremony later this year.

50th Annual A.I. Class

Twenty-three VASCI students travelled to the Cargill Meat Solutions Processing Plant in Wyalusing, Pennsylvania from March 17 through 19 and earned Cattle Artificial Insemination Certification from Select Sire Power.

Katie Wilson selected for William F. Field Alumni Scholarship

Katie Wilson, Pre-veterinary Science ‘16 was selected as the Veterinary and Animal Sciences Department recipient of the William F. Field Alumni Scholarship.

Congratulations to the 2015 NESA Team!

Thanks to the efforts of the seventeen students who participated, UMass placed as the second Overall Institution at the annual NESA competition held at Pennsylvania State University!

 

 

Sandra M. Roy receives Eugene M. Isenberg Award

Sandra M. Roy,  Animal Biotechnology and Biomedical Sciences Ph.D. candidate is one of ten UMass Amherst doctoral students selected to receive the Eugene M. Isenberg Award in recognition of their demonstrated academic merit and commitment to integrating science with management.

Researchers uncover the biological mechanisms that impact the treatment and prevention of breast cancer

Epidemiologist Susan Hankinson, veterinary and animal scientist Joseph Jerry and chemical engineer Shelly Peyton are using their research to help practitioners identify and treat preventatviely women at a higher risk for breast cancer and stop the cancer’s spread to vital organs. The breast cancer patient registry that Jerry and his colleagues at the Pioneer Valley Life Sciences Institute (PVLSI) and Baystate Medical Center have generated contributes high-value patient information to many who are researching the disease.

 

 

Nuno Carreiro, DVM accepts new position at Becker College

Becker College has hired Dr. Nuno Carreiro, (UMass MS 2002, BS 2001) as an assistant professor and staff veterinarian of the Lenfest Animal Health Center located on the College’s Leicester Campus. In this position, Dr. Carreiro will serve in an instructional role teaching courses and lab sessions, in addition to working in the Health Center twice a week as the staff veterinarian.

VASCI Introduces New Equine Management Class

Starting in the Spring 2015 semester Dr. Cassie Uricchio will be offering an Equine Management Class for Pre-Veterinary Science and Animal Science majors.

Kathleen Arcaro participating in study to validate new method for early identification of breast cancer-related changes

Kathleen Arcaro, Veterinary and Animal Sciences, and David Sela, Food Science, are part of a team led by Susan Sturgeon, School of Public Health and Health Sciences, that has received a two-year, $760,462 National Cancer Institute award to validate a new method for early identification of breast cancer-related changes that could help to identify women at higher risk and lead to new prevention strategies.

Animal Science majors, Brianna Swierk and Rebecca Swierk have published "The truth about chickens:  Facts about the egg" in the Collegian.  Based on their experience and education, they have debunked some common chicken myths.
