VASCI Seeks Animal Science Lecturer

Job Summary

The Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (VASCI) at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst invites applications for a non-tenure track, calendar-year (12 month) Lecturer position. Applicants should have expertise in at least one of the following areas: animal agriculture, research animal management, biotechnology, or veterinary medicine. Applicants with substantial knowledge and hands-on experience with the handling, husbandry, and health care of multiple species (large animals, small animals, and/or research animals) are encouraged to apply. 

Essential Functions

The successful candidate will teach introductory and advanced undergraduate courses, including: (1) laboratories for Introduction to Animal Science (fall) and Introduction to Animal Management (spring), the year-long course sequence required for Animal Science and Pre-Veterinary Science majors, and (2) lectures and laboratories for Research Animal Management I (fall) and Research Animal Management II (spring), the year-long course sequence required for students in the Biotechnology sub-plan of the Animal Science major. Additional responsibilities may include some or all of the following: academic advising, training and mentoring of teaching assistants, meeting with prospective students and their families, advising/coaching animal science students for team competitions/clubs, and serving on committees periodically. Summer duties will include academic advising, public outreach, and teaching a course in the candidate’s area of expertise.  Contributions to on-going summer courses may also be possible.

Other Functions

  • Work collaboratively and effectively to promote teamwork, diversity, equality and inclusiveness. 
  • Work in partnership with colleagues within the College of Natural Sciences community and across the campus to support the Dean’s strategic priorities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of the mission and goals of the College of Natural Sciences.

Minimum Qualifications

  • DVM and/or PhD in Animal Sciences or closely related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of documented successful teaching in Veterinary Medicine, Animal Agriculture, Research Animal Management, or Biotechnology.
  • Applicants with substantial knowledge and hands-on on experience with the handling, husbandry, and health care of multiple species (large animals and small animals).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with research animals.
  • Passion for teaching, advising, and mentoring undergraduate students.

Additional Details

The Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences enrolls approximately 500 undergraduate students within 3 majors: Animal Science, Pre-Veterinary Science, and Veterinary Technology. The Animal Science major is further divided into 3 sub-plans: Animal Management, Biotechnology, and Equine Science. VASCI faculty members are committed to inspiring and preparing students for becoming contributing members and leaders in the fields of veterinary medicine, biotechnology and biomedical research, animal agriculture, and the equine industry. Teaching efforts are supported with access to laboratories on campus and the UMass Farms which house sheep, goats, chickens, horses, and beef cattle. VASCI is also home to active research faculty with strengths in developmental biology, reproductive physiology, immunology, cancer biology, and toxicology.
