Flow Cytometry Core Facility

Our Flow Cytometer (FACS)Core Facility is equipped with four flow cytometers. A Becton Dickinson LSRII with two fixed alignment lasers (488nm, and 622nm) is available for trained users for 8 parameter analysis. A BD LSRFortessa DUAL is available for two trained users with one side capale of 3 laser, 16 parameter analysis, equipped with a High Throughput Sampler and the other side capable of 5 laser, 18 parameter analysis (including small particle analysis).

In addition the facility is capable of 16 parameter analysis and sorting with the 5 laser, fixed alignment, FACSAria II. For information regarding the optical parameters please see links below. This facility is supported by a full time Research Faculty.

  • Protocols (in progress)

  • Location: The FACS Facility is located in the Integrated Sciences Building (Room 068) at UMass Amherst. It is maintained by the Veterinary and Animal Sciences Faculty, but is sponsered by faculty across multiple disciplines. The facility is open to academic as well as non-academic members of the Five College and surrounding areas.
  • Contact Us: For more information regarding the FACS facility, please contact the facility manager.

      Sign up policy

Users of the LSRII will be able to sign up on a first come/first serve basis however you will not be able to sign up for more than 3 hours without prior permission from the flow facility manager, aburnsid [at] vasci [dot] umass [dot] edu (Amy Burnside).  Additionally, users are asked not to sign up more than 2 weeks in advance without permission from the facility manager.  Sign up for LSR II analysis with operator assistance or cell sorting with the FACSAria require contacting the facility manager by aburnsid [at] vasci [dot] umass [dot] edu (email), in person or by telephone at  413-545-1385.  Before considering a sorting experiment, the facility manager must be contacted and details of the experiment discussed.

Please note that sorting of human and non-human primate material will require prior discussion with the facility manager.

      Cancellation Policy
Cancellations on the LSR II must be done 24 hours in advance and a charge of 50% of the sign up time will be billed for cancellations less than 24 hours in advance.

Cancellations on the FACSVantage or FACSAria cell sorter must be done 48 hours in advance and a 4 hour charge will be billed for late cancellations if the time is not reassigned to another user.

The flow cytometery facility is available to academic and non-academic users in the Five College and surrounding area. Please see link for fee structure based on type of service and user.

  • Training: Contact the facility manager for the training schedule for the LSRI.I

Training on the LSR II for new students/postdocs and research technicians will be conducted quarterly, an email will be sent to the flow-core-l email list and the schedule will be posted here.  The training class will cover the basics of flow cytometry and an introduction to the use of the instrument and software analysis of data. All new users will be required to take this course before they are allowed to use the LSR II.  Any user inactive for six months will be required to repeat the course as policies may change.  One-on-one training and operator assisted use of the the LSRII is available for interested users and may be required for independent access to the facility. Individual training/operator assisted use can be scheduled with the facility manager.  Access to and independent use of the facility will be at the discretion of the facility manager and can be revoke upon improper use of the facility and failure to comply with facility policies.
