Ceren Göral

Graduate Student - ABBS

Ceren graduated from Istanbul Technical University (ITU), Turkey, with a double bachelor’s degree in Food Engineering and Molecular Biology & Genetics. She started her graduate studies at the master’s level in the Molecular Biology, Genetics and Biotechnology Department at ITU. Concurrently, she worked as a project assistant with several projects in the Biotechnology Laboratory at the Food Institute in The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) for over one and half years. In her second year, she participated in the Erasmus Program and completed her thesis research at the University of Sassari in Italy. Ceren joined the Animal Biotechnology & Biomedical Sciences (ABBS) Graduate Program as a Ph.D. student in the fall semester of 2017. She is co-advised by Dr. D. Joseph Jerry and Dr. Wei Cui both of the Veterinary & Animal Sciences Department. Ceren is using multidisciplinary approaches and advanced technologies to understand the molecular mechanisms affecting mammary gland development and lactation. Her major goal is identifying the genetic mechanisms regulating estrogen-induced development of mammary ducts. Her anticipated work will include evaluating variation in responses to estrogens among strains of mice with the Jerry Lab. Candidate pathways and polymorphisms will be tested using gene editing techniques (e.g. CRISPR/Cas9) in mammary cell lines and to create mouse models with the Cui lab. Once she completes her doctoral degree in animal biotechnology, Ceren plans to work for Turkish Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock. Her deep interest in the life sciences has shaped her training and career plans.
