The Gamma Sigma Delta Honor Society draws all of agriculture and the related areas together for the purpose of recognizing excellence and for other activities that promote the betterment of agriculture. People from teaching, research, extension, administration, and industry, interact in a common group. The Greek meaning of the name is "The binding together of earth, the mother of all, and the practice of agriculture and the arts relating thereto for the welfare of mankind." Gamma Sigma Delta recognizes an individual's excellence, and encourages others to achieve at higher levels and become better professionals in service to their professions and to society. Gamma Sigma Delta traces its beginning to 1905 at Ohio State University. Last year, the University of Massachusetts chapter of Gamma Sigma Delta joined more than 50 other chapters worldwide, including those at the major land grant and other prominent agricultural institutions in the United States. The Society has initiated over 100,000 members.
