Belted Galloway Management class honored with Richard C. Anderson Memorial Award

The Belted Galloway Management class was tremendously honored to receive the Richard C. Anderson Memorial Award at the Big E in West Springfield this fall! The award recognizes dedication to the Belted Galloway breed of beef cattle.

Service Dogs Fostered and Trained by UMass Students

The Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences has partnered with Diggity Dogs Service Dogs of Shelburne Falls to offer students the opportunity to foster and train service dogs. 

POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT - Extension Assistant/Associate Professor

The Institute for Applied Life Sciences (IALS) at the University of Massachusetts Amherst (http://www.umass.edu/ials/) invites applications from Ph.D.-level scientists to fill this position. Seeking candidates who have experience in developing animal models of diseases that complement IALS strengths in cancer biology, immunology, neurodevelopment and degeneration, reproduction, developmental biology and cellular dynamics.

Snoeyenbos Award 2016 Recipient

VASCI Career Prep Workshops

The Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences will be hosting four Career Prep Workshops designed specifically for Animal Science and Pre-Vet majors. These workshops will be facilitated by Tommie Joyner from Career Services and VASCI's Career and Internship Advisor, Dr. Sue Marston.

Hong Fellowship 2016 Recipient

The Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Animal Biotechnology  and Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program is pleased to announce that Felipe Navarrete has been selected as the 2016 recipient of the Frances and Chou-Chu Hong, DVM, PhD Graduate Fellowship in Veterinary and Animal Sciences.

A Tyrosine Kinase for FERTilization

Recent research findings from the Visconti Lab, at the UMASS-Amherst Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, were featured in the July 1, 2016 issue of Development, a highly regarded scientific journal for advances in developmental biology and stem cells: The tyrosine kinase FER is responsible for the capacitation-associated increase in tyrosine phosphorylation in murine sperm”.

UMass Belted Galloway herd welcomes the first calf of 2016

Dallas,a lively and friendly bull calf was delivered at 10pm on June 14th by Dr. Beltaire, Olivia Smith, VASCI class of 2017 and Brooke Alnwick, VASCI class of 2016.

2016 Graduate Retreat

The Veterinary and Animal Sciences Department 2016 Graduate Retreat was held June 6 at the Montague Retreat Center with 70 faculty members, staff and graduate students attending.

Dr. Katherine A. Beltaire selected for 2016 Distinguished Teaching Award

The Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences is very pleased to announce that Dr. Katherine A. Beltaire, DVM, DACT has been selected for the 2016 Distinguished Teaching Award. The campus-wide Distinguished Teaching Awards honor pedagogical excellence.  Faculty members must be nominated by current students and alumni and the selection process ensures continued input from students.  It is the highest recognition of teaching awarded by the campus.
