John holds a BS in Biochemistry and an MS in Biology, and is currently working as a lab manager in the laboratory of Dr. Kathleen Caron, in the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The focus of his lab studies is a peptide called adrenomedullin which is a vasodilator; this vasodilation of vessels reduces blood pressure. A pharmaceutical company has contracted with the Caron lab to try to determine through which receptors the vasodilation is mediated and thereby exploring the possibility of producing an adrenomedullin drug. The Caron lab has knockout mice lines missing the receptors which will be very useful to conduct these experiments. John’s primary focus is to determine if there is a difference in the drop in blood pressure when providing a dose of adrenomedullin. As of Spring 2015, John has been admitted as a Ph.D. candidate student in the Biological and Biomedical Sciences Program (BBSP) at UNC (http://bbsp.unc.edu/) where he plans to continue his doctoral studies.
